Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
