India's capital Rises to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as winter begins.
Nevertheless recently, the current city administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Reality
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during limited periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings observed during the festival in at least three years.
Cross-Border Consequences
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted city.
Various Contamination Factors
The situation in the city is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.
The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
Environmental contamination is projected to be causing ten thousand early mortalities annually in Delhi.
